Overview
Operations Management: Manages day-to-day operation of the Phlebotomy work groups including scheduling, troubleshooting, hiring, disciplining and working with staff, faculty and Manager to assure optimal workflow, customer service, and highest quality work.Formulates policies and procedures and training programs in area of responsibility to ensure consistent and reliable operations in all situations. Reviews policies and procedures with manager, medical director, and administrative director and writes in standard formats for distribution and implementation among staff.Models excellent written and personal communication skills by listening, maintaining a positive and helpful attitude and trains staff in these skills.Serves as a resource for other laboratory and hospital staff.Maintains and updates knowledge and skills by actively participating in continuing education and conferencesDevelops and maintains a customer service program. Utilizes external surveys, other customer input, and internal departmental data for improvement initiatives, and timely responses. Provides timely investigation, follow-up, reply to all internal and external technical or service questions or concerns. Technical Supervision and Coordination: As direct supervisor of the Phlebotomy work group, acts as a leader and technical role model for all lab processes, provides training when needed, and maintains current, detailed knowledge of section operations.Performs and coordinates higher level functions of laboratory including Quality Improvement, incident review and corrective action plans, developing new processes, advanced staff training, review of staff work, coordination of work assignments.Creates an environment of continuous improvement for staff. Human Resources Management: Designs and implements staffing plans to ensure coverage of work, meeting turnaround time goals, optimal patient care, and high quality results on all shifts.Maintains legal compliance and high level of integrity with all hiring and personnel practices. Coordinates with human resources to ensure correct and effective hiring practices are followed.Selects candidates who demonstrate professionalism, understanding of organizational culture, and job-specific knowledge.Takes responsibility for staff proficiency. Provides continuous feedback, encouragement, and coaching. Addresses employee performance concerns in an appropriate and timely manner.Manages human resources according to hospital policies and procedures. Ensures completion and compliance of employees annual performance appraisal review, current position description, annual mandatory education and competency, occupational health, integrity education, and develops work plans as needed. Manages human resources according to labor laws and collective bargaining contracts with no repetitive violations of contract articles or labor laws or untimely response to filed grievances.Provides training and development for staff as appropriate.Works with staff to recognize team and individual accomplishments, ensures open communication and teamwork, and promotes high level customer service. Education: Bachelor's degree or higher in Medical Technology, chemical, physical, biological science, business management or related field Experience: 2 years supervisory or lead experience in hospital laboratory services, or equivalent. Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies): Strong leadership, troubleshooting and productivity skills. Strong customer service skills and effective verbal and written communication skills. General knowledge of laboratory terminology, equipment, materials and techniques, regulations and safety.Skill in handling of laboratory specimens, record keeping and laboratory equipment. Ability to communicate and work effectively in a leadership role, and to interact in a positive, productive way with all hospital staff, and to maintain and promote a customer service focus in all aspects of work. Skill in using several different computer systems, including: word processing, spreadsheets, dedicated LIS/HIS, online training, and others. Ability to follow written and oral instructions accurately, and operate and maintain standard laboratory equipment. Knowledge of quality control, quality assurance, and CQI principles and processes. Ability to demonstrate performance of job duties to trainees. Demonstrate personal integrity, efficiency, and ability to adjust to rapidly changing priorities. Ability to work independently within established guidelines, and apply problem-solving skills. Ability to work in a multi-tasking environment and display soft and technical skills in various phlebotomy work environments. Qualifications
