Position Summary

The Architect - Medical Planning Support will provide comprehensive planning, design, construction, and Initial Outfitting & Transition (IO&T) management support for the Defense Health Agency Facilities Enterprise (DHA-FE) in Falls Church, VA. The role includes oversight of Military Construction (MILCON), Unspecified Minor Military Construction (UMMC), and Uniformed Services University (USU) design projects. The architect will support multiple healthcare construction efforts and special initiatives, ensuring facilities meet mission-critical healthcare requirements, codes, and operational standards.

Essential Duties
Project Oversight & CoordinationSupport planning, design, and execution of military medical construction and IO&T projects within the National Capital Region (NCR).Serve as a liaison between DHA, NAVFAC, USACE, Design of Record (DOR) firms, local command stakeholders, and contractors.Monitor constructability and quality assurance during design and construction phases.Support commissioning, turnover, and decommissioning of healthcare facilities.Technical and Medical Planning SupportProvide medical facility design and code compliance reviews.Offer constructability input to ensure adherence to project intent, healthcare design standards, and functional medical requirements.Review engineering change proposals (ECPs), RFIs, and contract modifications to evaluate impact on clinical operations and infrastructure performance.Assist with integration of IM/IT systems and specialized medical equipment into facility design and transition plans.Administrative and Reporting DutiesPrepare recurring and ad hoc reports, technical briefs, and executive summaries.Participate in Red Zone meetings, punch-list inspections, and commissioning activities.Review facility operational documents, including O&M manuals, training materials, and as-built drawings.Coordinate responses to user input and facilitate communication among government and contractor teams.Professional Qualifications:
Candidates must demonstrate relevant experience and knowledge in healthcare architecture, military facility planning, and transition management. Required qualifications include:
Experience across the full hospital project delivery lifecycle, including design, construction, and activation.Proven support of DoD healthcare projects, including medical equipment planning and IO&T implementation.Knowledge of medical facility codes, standards, and DHA/NAVFAC/USACE procedures.Direct experience supporting DHA and NAVFAC MFPO in healthcare facility commissioning and activation.
Education and Experience
Licensed Architect (or equivalent degree with significant healthcare facility experience).Minimum 5 years of experience in healthcare architecture or construction management.Minimum 1 year of experience working on medical facility projects with NAVFAC and/or USACE.
Work Environment
On-site support in Bethesda, MD or Falls Church, VALocal travel up to 25% to medical facility project sites
Physical Demands

The role typically involves a combination of office settings and on-site visits to healthcare facilities, which may include construction zones or areas with ongoing equipment installations. Adherence to safety protocols and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when required are also essential.
